Celebrating Literacy and School Pride at Edwin J. Kiest Elementary School

(Dallas, TX) — Joy, energy, and a shared love of reading filled Edwin J. Kiest Elementary School as students, families, and educators gathered to celebrate the unveiling of a brand-new book vending machine—welcomed in true Kiest style with cheerleaders, student ambassadors, and a drumline that brought the whole campus to life.

Dallas Education Foundation was honored to celebrate alongside Principal Mendoza, Dr. Bernardino, Kiest teachers and staff, student ambassadors, All Stars of the Month, student speakers, and so many incredible moms who help make this school community shine. From the moment ambassadors greeted guests with handshakes to the drumline’s booming rhythms, it was clear: Kiest is a place where students are seen, celebrated, and encouraged to dream big.

One of the most unforgettable moments of the morning was watching the All Stars of the Month walk the red carpet—beaming with pride as they selected a new book to take home. Experiences like these show the power of creating joyful literacy moments that students remember, talk about, and carry with them long after the celebration ends.

This unveiling was made possible through the generous support of Atmos Energy, whose continued partnership plays a critical role in expanding access to books for Dallas ISD students. Each book vending machine reflects Atmos Energy’s long-term commitment to literacy and student success across our district. We are deeply grateful to Susan, Kim, Nira, and Joy for the lasting impact of their support.

A special thank you as well to Trustee Dan Micciche for joining the celebration and for his steadfast commitment to Dallas ISD District 3. Your presence—and continued advocacy for students and schools—help make moments like this possible.

At Dallas Education Foundation, we believe that access to books opens doors to imagination, confidence, and opportunity. The celebration at Edwin J. Kiest Elementary was a powerful reminder of what happens when schools, families, and community partners come together to put books directly into students’ hands—one choice, one story, and one proud reader at a time.
