Heart of Teaching Grant Helps Trinidad Garza Students Soar to Victory at Drone Competition

(Dallas, TX) —Students at Trinidad Garza Early College High School are reaching new heights—literally—thanks to a Heart of Teaching grant awarded to educator Yun Liu.

With support from the Dallas Education Foundation, Yun Liu used his Heart of Teaching grant to purchase drones, equipment, and essential resources that allowed her students to compete in their first official drone tournament of the season. The results were extraordinary.

Competing against 17 teams, Trinidad Garza students returned home with two championship awards, including a prestigious Communication Mission Award, recognizing excellence in teamwork, strategy, and execution.

“This competition helped students develop so many valuable skills,” Liu shared. “From programming and problem-solving to communication and aviation fundamentals, students gained hands-on experience that connects directly to real-world STEM careers.”

The drone competition challenged students across multiple disciplines, engaging both those interested in coding and those considering futures in aviation, engineering, or technology. Beyond technical skills, students learned collaboration, resilience, and strategic thinking under pressure.

Students also credited the guidance and mentorship of their teachers for their success. With clear strategies and individualized support, educators helped ensure every team member could contribute meaningfully to the competition.

In addition to equipment, the Heart of Teaching grant helped provide team shirts and resources that strengthened team identity and confidence—key elements in competitive STEM environments.

“We are so grateful,” Liu said. “These resources made a real difference. Because of this generosity, our students succeeded, learned, and felt empowered. The impact on STEM education at our school has been incredible.”

The Dallas Education Foundation’s Heart of Teaching grants continue to empower educators like Yun Liu to create innovative, career-connected learning experiences—opening doors for Dallas ISD students to discover what’s possible.
